Return of the Hachi-Roku: Toyota FT-86

Touted as the spiritual successor to the AE-86, immortalized in the anime Initial D and Japanese drifting culture, the FT-86 is aimed squarely at trying to take some market share back from the Hyundai Genesis Coupe and other rear wheel drive performance offerings.

The Toyota FT-86 arrives with bold and unique, yet near-production ready, exterior styling. But, things on the inside are a little more Star Trek than reality, with some over-designed elements that may make it to the production version in a more practical capacity.

Under the hood is a Subaru-produced 2.0 litre boxer 4-cylinder that is reported to produce somewhere around 200 to 250 hp. But, unlike most Subaru engines, this one will be powering the rear wheels exclusively, thanks to a 6-speed manual gearbox
